By nature, the fashion industry is competitive, but so are those who are trying to break into the fashion industry. During New York Fashion Week, it's all about who has the best seats at shows, who spots which celebrities, who gets the best pictures, etc. On Twitter as well as in the blogosphere, I am noticing that people are getting more competitive and less supportive.
It is no secret that I am heavily involved with sports. I live for football (go Bears!) and hockey (stupid lockout), in particular. March Madness owns my world for three weeks. ESPN rules our television. I have more jerseys than blazers in my closet. I also follow many, many, many sports journalists on Twitter. What I have noticed is that the sports industry is infinitely more supportive and less competitive than the fashion industry. They will challenge your opinions, but they will never tell you that you are fat or ugly or that you dress poorly. They don't care about your physical appearance; they care about your opinions and thoughts.
Glam Kitten's Litter Box will be going through a transitional phase over the next few weeks. I am not sure which direction it will take, but I will keep you informed.
We need more positivity in our lives. My love for fashion will never end.

Holy mother we really are twins.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered going into sports journalism? When I was in journalism school, so many of my professors begged girls to consider the field because print and broadcast are aching to have a more female presence. Like, handing out jobs like candy kind of aching.
Seriously, Bonnie, you totally need to consider that field, if you haven't already.
Can't wait to see what direction this blog takes! Good luck with the transition. xoxo
Here here. I will always be a loyal reader no matter which direction you take things in.

Bonnie, a sincere post. Even thought I'm a new follower, I'm also looking forward to the direction this blog will take.
ReplyDeleteI clicked over here just because your post is echoing some of the thoughts I've been having these past couple months about the blogging community.
ReplyDeleteIt does seems like there has been quite a bit of scandal going on lately, from anthro-gate to plagiarizing and on and on. I think this shift has really happened as the blogging world is making a shift from community where everyone gets together, has meaningful discussions and supports each other to the business aspect where everyone is really out for themselves. It seems like everything has become quite competitive among the larger and smaller bloggers as a result of this, of the building ones following, who can get more sponsors, ect. Sometimes I feel like thoughtful discussions on how to improve ourselves and the blogging community have really been lost, the business side of things has made everyone kind of fearful and wary of anyone who voices a different option.
Id love to see a return to everyone really supporting each other, through promoting positive body images, differing styles and more of a discussion about style without another feeling the need to jump down someone else throat.
Jezzz, I sound like a grump here! There are so many awesome bloggers out there trying to promote this, Id say just stay true to what feels right to you. Good luck with this process dear! :)
*sigh*
DeleteThat was quite a incoherent post, I guess I'm just trying to say that I'd like more openness in the community. I want there to be a open line of dialogue without anyone feeling the need to "troll" or without people expressing differing options being labels as "trolls" and for everyone to support each other, rather than feeling the need to push so hard for the business aspect of blogs. It does feel like there's a bit of fakery going on right down in the blogging world with everyone trying the blog style the makes money and it makes me a little sad, I love blogs that have a different aspect to them. (I personally like that you wear jerseys!) I'm sure I've just opened my big month and irritated a lot of people and I do apologize for that.
Good luck with this, I wish you the best of luck! (And sorry for writing a unorganized book in your comments section.)
I love the idea of you making this a fitness blog!!!!!! Your pinterests always inspire me!!!
ReplyDeleteI think you can continue the fashion aspect as being what a beautiful, real woman wears. I've recently stopped following some fashion blogs that became too "industry" and too much like a poor attempt at a fashion magazine (I do like fashion magazines, in part because I feel like there's less temptation to forget that they are sponsored/beholden to people giving them money... you really can't trust some bloggers' endorsements at all). I like that the things you wear are creative but still wearable and attainable. Even a model would get laughed at wearing some of the things other fashion bloggers wear. What makes for a pretty, artistic picture might look pretty silly out running errands, I say. You usually look fierce but like you live in the real world, too. That said, I'll follow you even if you stray to topics besides fashion :)
ReplyDeleteHi dear, I love your blog and this post is really cool! I´m supporting no matter which direction you take, I also have more jerseys than blazers:)
ReplyDeletekisses chris
I know what you mean. I feel everyone is going through the same thought stream. I look forward to your new direction :)
ReplyDelete∞ © tanvii.com ∞
I really only follow 2 sports (b-ball and f-ball) so if you can take it that my fave teams aren't your fave teams, then I'm in! If you can't take a friendly little joking around....well, I'm still in. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, you are such a dear! Thanks for your kind response to my rambling comments there, I love being able to have a discussion like this. One reason why I do like your blog so much is that you wear what most of us wear, just a cute girl living life. And while I really can't fault people for wanting to make money, I've always liked that your blog was unconsidered, it felt like you always dressed very true to what you like and your personal style, as opposed to what a company/companies dictate. You have always had your own voice and I really enjoy seeing that!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually quite excited to see if you do go in a sports direction with your blog, I don't watch very many of the mainstream sports but i would love to hear your perspective on it. (I think you could blog a little about your life, I remember a while back you were talking about being in a store with tornado warning going on, that just sounded like the craziest thing to me!) Good luck with the new direction of the blog, I will remain a reader for sure!
Whatever you choose to do with your blog I will continue to read it :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing how you transition your blog- not that I think it needs changing, but I understand what you mean. I think people can be extremely closed off to creativity and very hurtful.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you :-)
Love this :)
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed your fashion material for the longest. Ever since you've found my blog, I've been a fan of yours. I vastly support your work and always have.
ReplyDeleteAs for taking a blog in a different direction, here is insight from me. My primary blog was initially about the Gran Turismo video game series. I ran out of ideas early on and wasn't committed too much towards blogging. It wasn't until I started blogging about almost anything as to when my blog started having a new identity and had plenty of life to it. Afterwards, I made separate blogs in hopes to expand my audience with more focused content. So no matter what you do or what direction you take "Glam Kitten's Litter Box," one constant should remain- a love of blogging. Don't leave your audience hanging if you enjoy blogging and still find the time to post for all of your fans (myself included).
Whatever you want to do with this blog is fine with me. Just keep supplementing your unique and amazing character in your work.

I'm pretty confident that whatever direction you go in, I will want to come with you!
ReplyDeletetotally understand the competition negativity and hatred. Stay positive and always surround yourself with positive people. It's key, and something I always stick to. You're going to be amazing whatever you do in life. xO!
ReplyDeletewww.thehautecookie.com
I love your style, and you love sports, and I love when you wear sports stuff! I hope you keep on showing you unique sense of style, and keep this the light hearted, fun, down to earth, blog that I love!!! Hope you don't get any more negativity!! xoxo!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see your blog's new direction!
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to be more supportive and, if you have any ideas in that direction, I'll support them. Plus, I'm sticking around here no matter what new directions you head in.
ReplyDeleteStand true to who you are and you will find the right blog path. I've enjoyed reading your posts and seeing what fashion trends are in...what's fun...what's new....what's new that was once old (I've always told you when that happens!) I think you're a young woman with a great attitude, her head on straight, knows what's really important, and loves life. I'll be waiting to see where you go from here.
ReplyDeleteYeah! I'm so sick of reading the same boring posts over and over again. These bloggers have opinions that are so snarky and bland. I'm hoping to see more fun and spirited bloggers like yourself. Sports are part of my life. I'm not a big NFL fan but I always follow my favorite soccer clubs in Europe and some in the US.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. It is so important to be supportive and not mean because that's what being a community is all about. Anyway, I can't wait to see what direction you will be taking with your blog :)
ReplyDeleteThis post is so cute. Loves it!
ReplyDeleteIf you get a sec, it'd mean the world to me if you would come check out my latest post!

excited to hear that you have plans for your blog and I look forward to witnessing them! I hope this change didn't come about after you were offended by something or spoken ill of, that wouldn't make me too pleased!!! And I hope we still get to see some outfits!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about this current 'trend' involving fashion blogs. Whatever you choose to do with your blog, I will follow along. xo
ReplyDeletenice post ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually have noticed that before. In my country that happened already few years ago and for me it looks like they were the readers who started to be mean 1st, but you never know. (It's actually strange that I started my current blog about styles, anyway O.o!)
ReplyDeleteThe prob might be that at the moment money got involved, some bloggers started to take themselves and blogging "a bit" too seriously. And wherever there's serious competition there will be envy & mean peeps :/
Even in sports :(.
That's a #sadfact
^Lol, hashtag!

How hilarious! Jennifer posted on this & you and I posted about doing what you want and being yourself, hahahahaha!! Laughs for my Monday, love it!! Hey, you love sports - so do I!! I used to play field hockey and get sent off for knocking girls over, haha. But, they should have just stopped being sissy ;) And another time I played with a fractured foot, I didn't realize I had fractured it, I heard a pop, but thought it was a twig in the field, so I ignored it and kept playing - scored 3 goals and helped block 2!! And then had to be taken off the field as my foot swelled like a watermelon and my shoe was about to burst, haha!! But, it was awesome :)) There is too much nasty-ness in this blogging world. And it's bull! We need to support each other, especially women...we're all we've got in this male dominated world, we need to realise that! Blog how you wish. I mean I blog about Art & History stuff and I never think anyone will want to read it, but I do it anyways, because my blog is meant to be about what I enjoy. And I like reading about what other people like, even if it's something I don't do. I just like learning. So, you just post on what you wish & I'l always be around to read it and enjoy!! My house is sports dominated, so it'll never be boring to me & plus you can keep me in the loop on US Football since I'm over here now & we don't watch it as Soccer is football & that's the dominate sport here, I miss my tackles, hahaha! Have a sweet week doll!! Xxx
ReplyDeleteThat's great, dear!! <3
ReplyDeleteMorning! This is the third blog post I've read this morning along the same lines and it makes me quite sad. I'm not a fashion blogger but the ones I've come across are usually really nice. Food bloggers on the other hand...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I rarely comment but I wanted to say is that you should blog for yourself. You can only control your own actions. If other people want to send negativity your way, treat it like mail posted in the wrong post box and send it back without opening it. Never let other people's mean attitude affect yours. You have a really cool blog - don't lose that!
I definitely agree with you! We need more positivity in all aspects of our lives, I'm excited to see where you will take your blog :) I love reading your posts so I know whatever you do will be awesome!

Hi Bonnie! I totally am with you.. I have noticed all the things you've pointed out about the fashion industry and bloggers. It's sad and can be discouraging, but there are still plenty of us out here who blog because it's fun and who wear clothes because we love them. No matter what direction you take your blog, I'll be reading! I've become such a fan of yours mostly because you're REAL and you keep it real. It's so refreshing! :)

I completely agree with you, which is more of the reason I've been a bit drawn back on Twitter, well that and because I've been really busy with life, haha! We all should just support each other! Love ya and of course, looking forward to your new path. xx/ Madison
ReplyDeleteI am sorry you are feeling disillusioned by the industry- and I definitely understand it. Hopefully you can bring a new voice to the stage and help break free from the negativity.
ReplyDeleteAwww I would love to know what direction you're taking Bonnie...but all I can say is that you have to always be true to yourself. Glad you aired your sentiments out in the open!

I've absolutely noticed the things you mention. It's very common here in Sweden with mean comments and mean blog post about other bloggers. I think that is so unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI don't post often, but I visit your blog regularly, and just wanted to say... your blog is what you make of it. Go with the flow and see where you end up. You have a wonderful following of women here, many of us are interested in plenty of things aside from fashion, (I love football too!) so just post what you feel and it'll all come together in time. Plus we still love your style too, so keep doing that too if you so please! Your style is cute, sensible and practical, I love it! ♥
ReplyDeleteI agree completely--I hate how much negativity there is in the fashion industry. For the most part, I see positivity in the blog-world, but I know that's not always the case. I can't wait to see what's in store for you :)
ReplyDeleteWhichever direction you take, I'm sure your followers will continue to support you! I agree about the fashion industry--it's so heavily involved in how you look and what you look like. I'm in the industry, but for Levi's, which embraces a woman's shape and not size. I'm fortunate enough to work for a company that isn't so high fashion that it accepts people of all sizes.

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the new changes on Glam Kitten. And, as a UF alum, I must say that I am loving that Tebow jersey.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do Bonnie, I know you'll be fabulous at it. Fashion is fashion, and is for everyone, not just for the "it" girls or the elite. I started with my blog as a "fashion" blog, and then decided I am so much more than what I wear or what I like people wearing, so I basically made it into a "me" blog, meaning I'll post whatever the fuck I want :) Everyone will have something to say, and I don't expect everyone to agree with what I write and thats fine. But I do think you have a talent and I enjoy your blog honestly. So whatever it is you're going to, you'll always have this girl as a follower!

I have to agree with you and I have been in this field since age 17. Two degrees and working in this field, I have the same opinion. Internships are especially hard in the fashion industry..women in the industry are really mean and not supportive at all. I have many stories but I try to stay positive. Many work in this field because they love what they do and not for anything else.

I agree; sometimes it's so tough even working in this industry. I definitely can't wait to see your future posts!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you are reading the wrong blogs? I read lots of positive blogs... but they tend to be by "everyday" folks rather than fashion-industry people. Good luck choosing your direction!

Good for you trying to find more positivity. So sorry to read you've encountered meanness. Positivity is something I should aspire to more myself. I've run into haters too - and many of them seem to set up temporary accounts on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter and then disappear after they've done their hate-spewing, false-flagging, thumbs downs etc.. Speaking of fashion bloggers, football, and body image I just did a related blog post titled "Lingerie News: Lady Gaga, Football, PINK, Undie Awards" (after 2:44 AM Oct 1 that was stamped 11:44PM Sept. 30). It could use some editing and your advice is always welcome. I always love when you use your fun style of teasing too. I still think we could use that sarcasm font. I'll be looking forward to reading your blog no matter what direction you take it in.
ReplyDeleteI love you there shouldn't be any meanness! Seriously though I agree with a lot of what you have written and I hope you find the direction you are looking for. What I find most annoying are some of the meaningless comments which are like one word long and then filled with self promotion. Also, to a lesser extent, the amount of time you need to dedicate to receive any comments back. But there's great stuff about blogging too, of course.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your new way honey!!
ReplyDeletexx
A new direction is fine, but I'm begging you, Bonnie...do not leave the blogosphere! You never cease to bring a smile to my face with your posts and photographs. There would be such a huge gap of sadness if you were no longer a voice in the fashion blogging world! :(
ReplyDeleteKeep up the positivity Bonnie! I always keep in mind that negative, mean people are simply not happy with themslves which is quite sad. Have fun taking your blog in a new direction. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know what Bonnie, that was really well said. I am a little fed up of the fashion world and its negativity towards anything but the idea of perfection! My blog is also starting to steer away from a purely fashion based idea, more towards women's and local lifestyle in general. I will always love fashion but it is just not a very nice place to be inside sometimes! Have fun with the change, and dont let anyone stop you doing what you think is best for you, and what you feel good about doing

Sounds like there are some interesting changes afoot...you go girl...just be yourself and put on your blog things that you love and you won't go wrong...
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see what changes you'll make here. :) I'm sure that with your personality, it'll be great no matter what it will be. And major yay for being a sports fanatic - I'm one too, and I love it. Too bad NHL is on lockdown, though it means more great players for the Finnish hockey league, SM-Liiga. Still, I'm majorly disappointed with the way the big bosses are handling the policies on NHL right now. It's not cool for the players. (Just sayin'.)
ReplyDeleteAnywho, wasn't supposed to ramble about sports, but the NHL mention there kinda got to me, lol. It seems like so many people are talking about the negativity in the fashion industry - and blogging community - at the moment. I don't know if it's the uncertain financial times that get people so self-centered or what, but it is annoying. I blog for the fun of it, and because it challenges me to be a better version of myself, inside and out.
But it's never about the number of comments or followers. It's about having fun with it, and to me, about meeting/finding amazing personalities such as yourself around the world. I may not be able to travel to see everyone in person, but through blogging, I can connect with so many people. And that's what I love. If I happened to get a pair of shoes for doing that, it would be an amazing and unexpected bonus. Not that I couldn't pay my shoes with my paychecks.
Omg, babbling too much... I hope you'll have an amazing week, and can't wait to see the changes! ♥ xoxo
I hear ya the fashion indutry is very competitive and kind of petty. I try not to get involved and I enjoy fashion my own way!
ReplyDeleteI've been having the same problem with the writing industry--it's so cutthroat. I think it's great you're growing and changing!
ReplyDeleteI've been feeling a similar way about the blogosphere myself. It's one of the reasons I quit blogging actually. Good for you for actually articulating it! Getting the conversation started about these things is the only way to bring about any change.
ReplyDeleteFor me personally, I found having a hobby (fashion blogging) that put so much emphasis on my physical appearance to be draining on my self-esteem and attitude towards fashion as a whole. I work in the fashion industry... that's plenty for me haha.
Regarding sports VS fashion. Since sports is stereotypically thought to be a man's hobby and fashion a woman's, I almost wonder if you've touched on differences between the sexes. Just a thought! We as men and women need to learn from each other. ANYWAYS, I hope you keep blogging, you have a funny, outrageous personality that deserves to be shared.
I'm not a big fan of sports (maybe I'm bitter because I suck at them haha), but I totally agree with what you're saying here. Some circles can be very cutthroat, and I just don't like the feel of that.
ReplyDeleteHello little lady, well this could be interesting, your love of sports is definitely one the passions you talk about oh so enthusiastically here, so do what you please doll, your blog.
ReplyDeleteYes The Fashion Industry is incredibly competitive and the blogging world a little judgy, but it's still cool, you have to have thick skin to deal with the haters and the negativity... and I am with you on the more positivity front girl!
Bring it!
x.o.x.o
I got the same impression lately but still Fashion is love that never ends.
ReplyDeleteI also notice a huge pushes onto blogger from fashion industry in my country lately. Ones receiving something from them, they keep pushing you to publish something that you just do not need.
sport on the other hand is a better place for fan but not inside of it. Fashion/style bloggers are more into fashion than sports fan are into thier sport. Bloggers are sneaking inside of industry but Sport fans are left on special fan spot made for them. That's only my opinion for sure

Hey love,
ReplyDeleteI completely understand what you are saying. I've been noticing phases of support versus competitiveness & meanness. It just goes hand in hand in so many industries, it's ridiculous. Regardless of what you choose to do, know that I will always support you, and I am so glad to have "met" you through the blogosphere. I love you!

Great message, doll. I'm with you- I don't see the point of blogging if we're all not supporting each other; what is the end game to fighting/getting nasty?

Great article, I so agree with you
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing where your new direction will take you : )
ReplyDeleteAs a sports fan, I mostly agree with you. I think, to some degree, there is still a divide over men's and women's sports on some levels. But bodies of all shapes and sizes are celebrated much more, I think because people respect how much their bodies allow them to achieve.

I feel your sentiments, I'm a big aficionado of sports too, love my football,(soccer in the US)and Tennis, I'm pretty much into most sports, I try and avoid the fashion gossip, the news the negativity of the fashion industry. There needs to be more open mindedness to the industry, for me there is no such thing as 'hot or not'! it is about expressing ourselves and having fun with style, no need to take it serious.

Totally agree with you :)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing what new direction you pursue Bonnie. I agree that we need more positivity and support in fashion blogging instead of anonymous mean-spirited commenters.
ReplyDeletePerfect article! I totally agree with you.I noticed that, too! Bloggers and the whole fashion industry is very competitive. Lately bloggers are very cruel.I am sorry for all the bloggers who have so many mean comments, mostly from anonymous readers:( I can't wait to see your future posts! Good luck and have a nice day :))
ReplyDeleteEnergiq
I agree with you. The fashion world and bloggers in general are competitive. While a little competition is okay and healthy. I think it is so important that we be supportive of each other.
ReplyDeleteTracy @ Sunny Days and Starry Nights
This is an excellent post. You wrote everything perfectly.
ReplyDeleteOne reason why I haven't had any real personal style posts is because I'm a perfectionist. If the shot isn't perfect, I won't want to post it. Plus, I haven't really had time to do a shoot or even get someone who knows how to take the perfect shot besides myself. I'm not trying to be better than anyone else in that regard, but I'd like to put my best stuff out there.
I'm not really sensitive to negative feedback on an outfit. If I like what I'm wearing, I don't care if you don't; but I have noticed the same things you have. People are getting mean.
I will miss your usual outfit posts, but you still have my FULL support. Have a great day, Bonnie! Thanks for trying to bring back some positivity!

that's 1 of the reasons why quit doing fashion posts. I couldn't take it. I hate posting pictures of myself because I get comments, but then I get comments if I don't post pictures of myself. That I'm not sincere enough. It is not personal enough. You can't win.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. I'm a big football fan too. Can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for your blog.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, fashion is definitely a very competitive field but I also find while blogging, even though sometimes I receive haters' comment, there are always many others fashion bloggers who are very supportive.

It's not worth doing something if it doesn't make you happy.. we'll be here waiting to see what you come up with next.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your struggles but agree that fashion has become way too competitive. Looking forward to seeing your new direction!
ReplyDeleteIt did seem like fashion week brought out the worst in some ladies I follow. More so to the ones who went since they either took pictures of other people there to make fun of or took pictures to brag about. Both of which I'm not interested in. Interested to see where you take your blog and thank you for always keeping your content real and unfiltered :)
ReplyDeleteWell said! I think fashion world should be a little more... sportmanship? Kiss ;)

That is very true and very sad. I am sorry you too had to encounter this, but it has unfortunately become the norm. Although there are some truly lovely gals who are fashion bloggers, on the whole I have found it to be cliquey and shallow and that's why I have become less and less involved in it.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find the right balance for you! I think the most important thing is to be true to who we are and to let our blogs reflect that.
Awww... Just follow your heart my dear. But as for me, I blog about fashion because I enjoy it and I don't care what negativity people might want to bring.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your future posts.

Bonnie, I can definitely sense the emotion behind today's post. It's true, in fashion I really think it is all about who do you know, what do you own, how can you get access to the latest, greatest, and let's face it, the more gorgeous and model-like the blogger...the more hits.
ReplyDeleteI believe in healthy competition. It is good to improve one-self. If it becomes bitter and mean, then it's not healthy anymore. I believe no matter what industry it is, there bound to be mean and not too supportive people. Could be due to jealousy and hatred. Don't think we can avoid meeting people like this. But once you know you meet someone like that, just stay away from them and stick with people who are positive. Makes you a better person =)

Well in every job, happens about things you described.
ReplyDeleteWhat is important for you is to do the job you love you love, the way you prefer!
This is such a great post Bonnie. From what I have seen in the Fashion blogging world it is more and more about designer labels and looking like a model - pretty sad since every day women cannot really afford Alexander Wang shoes and they cannot pull off the typical model look...

Best of luck for the new direction you are going to take. But be strong always, do not let the negativity affect you , moderate comments if you want to but keep blogging. We all have different body shapes and sizes and different taste in fashion. Yet, I strongly believe in love and I believe in treating blogger friends with love and compassion and we must encourage and value each other in this blogging community. I support you and what you have written in this post. Please do not let anything affect you. Be yourself, be as you are, as you always have been, and do what satisfies your heart and soul.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
have a great weekend !
Good luck on your new changes doll. Changed is always good.

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the changes. I don't understand why bloggers feel the need to be mean to each other. Luckily, there are more positive people out there than negative.
